Getting operational

Corporate bank account opening

Bank selection, file preparation and introduction

In short

Banking is the step that most often delays a DIFC launch. We match the structure to banks that actually take it, prepare the file to the standard the compliance team expects, and make the introduction. Six to twelve weeks is realistic for a straightforward operating company.

What you get

  • Bank shortlist matched to the structure, activity and expected flows
  • Complete application file including source of funds and wealth evidence
  • Business plan and expected transaction profile written for a compliance reader
  • Introduction to relationship managers and coordination through onboarding
  • Support with additional queries during compliance review

Timeline: 6 to 12 weeks from a complete file

Why applications get declined

Rarely because the business is bad. Usually because the file does not answer the compliance team's questions before they ask. Unexplained source of wealth, a shareholder in a jurisdiction the bank has exited, an activity that sounds like money services when it is not, or a transaction profile that does not match the business plan.

The fix is preparation. Write the source of wealth narrative properly, evidence it, explain the expected flows in numbers and counterparties, and address the awkward parts directly rather than hoping they are not noticed.

What banks expect from a holding vehicle

Holding companies and Prescribed Companies are harder to bank than operating businesses, because there is no trading activity to explain the flows. The file needs to make the purpose of the structure obvious and connect it to a real economic activity somewhere.

Structures with a DIFC operating entity alongside the holding vehicle bank more easily, which is one of several reasons families end up with both.

Questions

How long does it take to open a bank account in the DIFC?

Six to twelve weeks from a complete file for an operating company. Holding vehicles and structures with complex ownership take longer. Applications submitted with gaps take considerably longer, because each round of questions adds weeks.

Is there a minimum balance?

Most banks serving DIFC entities expect a minimum relationship balance, and the level varies widely by bank and client profile. We tell you the expected figure for each bank on the shortlist before you apply.

Can the account be opened before the licence is issued?

No. Banks require the trade licence and certificate of incorporation as part of the file, so account opening runs after incorporation. Preparation can and should happen in parallel.
